Bladder Cancer Symptoms

Bladder cancer symptoms differ depending upon how advanced the cancer is. White men over the age of 40 who smoke have the highest risk of contracting bladder cancer and should speak to a doctor or proctologist if they experience symptoms different than the ones listed in this article. But anyone with a history of bladder cancer in their family needs to be aware of the early signs of bladder cancer. The earlier bladder cancer is detected and treated, the higher a patient’s chance is of recovery. Bladder cancer can reoccur.

Early Bladder Cancer Symptoms

The most common symptom is blood in the urine without accompanying pain such as cramps. This can and should send anyone rushing to telephone a doctor for a urinalysis. The blood does not have to be bright red or copious because some types of bladder cancer does not cause bleeding. Urine resembling cola contains old or dried blood cells. Patients with frequent bladder infections may have their urine checked for microscopic traces of blood that may indicate cancer. Blood in the urine may come in episodes rather than being an every day event.

Other common early symptoms include incontinence; can only urinate in very small amounts despite a sensation of holding a lot of urine; chronic urinary tract infections; a burning sensation when urinating; abdominal pain and back pain. Another symptom sometimes experienced is urgency. In a healthy body, there is a significant delay between the body’s warning that it needs to urinate and it involuntarily releasing urine. But with bladder cancer or some other types of bladder problems, this delay is gone.

Advanced Bladder Cancer Symptoms

Patients exhibiting the following symptoms are showing the advanced stages of bladder cancer. Hopefully, doctors and proctologists will not often encounter these because a patient has contacted them when early bladder cancer symptoms develop.

The bladder becomes distended because it is partially blocked by one or more tumors. People with a distended bladder usually can only dribble urine rather than produce a normal stream. They may also suffer from fevers due to chronic bladder infections. Pain creeps down from the back into the flanks or bones caused by backed up urine in the tumor-filled bladder. The most stoic of patients pale when they begin coughing up blood. Even a small amount of blood mixed with phlegm shows that cancer has spread to the lungs or to bones, making this the most dreaded of bladder cancer symptoms.
